In 1991, makeup artist Bobbi Brown‘s dream was realised when she debuted her line of cosmetics – just 10 brown-based lipsticks – at Bergdorf Goodman in New York City. With this set of lipsticks, a woman could create an infinite number of wearable shades, just by mixing and blending them. The natural lip colours quickly gained a strong following first among beauty insiders, then women everywhere, and Bobbi’s career took off.
Word spread quickly. Bobbi’s unique approach to cosmetics was a long-awaited gift for women who wanted a more natural look. The magazine industry’s most prominent beauty editors got behind Bobbi, and her small, insider brand garnered big time buzz. The range expanded beyond lipstick. Bobbi’s foundations were yellow-based, not pink, revolutionizing face makeup as it’s known today. And, before long, she showed that she was as adept at neutrals as she was at bright and bold colors. This sea change in the beauty market caught the attention of cosmetics empire Estée Lauder, who bought Bobbi Brown Cosmetics in 1995, just four years after the company’s inception. Today, Bobbi Brown retains creative control of the brand.
