Masseria San Domenico
Against the backdrop of the blue Mediterranean sky and sea, Masseria San Domenico lies only 500 metres from the Adriatic coast in the Puglia region of Italy, its whitewashed building standing amidst centenarian olive groves. The building itself goes back to the 15th century, when it was used by the Knights of Malta as a watch-tower. Keeping intact the original structure of the “masseria”, it was lovingly restored in the early 1990s and opened as a 5 star boutique-style hotel in 1996.
The centrepiece of the hotel is undoubtedly the magnificent irregular-shaped swimming pool encircled by rocks and plants, which stands amidst 100 hectares of olive groves and orchards. The pool is filled with naturally-filtered seawater, reflecting the philosophy of the hotel’s thalassotherapy Spa which has just recently been certified as Leading Spa (the hotel is member of the Leading Small Hotels of the World since 2003).
Masseria San Domenico is home to one of Italy’s best thalassotherapy Spas. The Spa offers a host of treatments using the rich seawater and seaweed found in the nearby Adriatic Sea. Seawater is completely purified by filters and heated once it arrives at the Spa.
Top treatments include “Douche d’Evian” or “Douche d’Affusion”, a relaxing massage whereby two masseuses use special oils containing marine extracts, and “Thalatherm” where the body is covered with a layer of crushed seaweed and then warmed with seawater steam for 15 minutes.
Accommodations comprise a choice of 48 atmospheric rooms and suites, each of them tastefully furnished in a traditional style and with views over the lush estate and the Adriatic Sea in the distance.
The San Domenico’s main restaurant has a suggestive vaulted dining room dating back to the 1700s, now serving Apulian specialties accompanied by a wide selection of fine local and national wines. Guests can have breakfast in “Sala del Fico” while in summer the “Pool Grill” serves a daily regional buffet lunch by the outdoor swimming pool. Special low-calorie menus are also available at lunch and dinner
As well as the outdoor swimming pool the hotel has a beach, two tennis courts, a modern gym, sauna, steam bath and a new 18-hole golf course. The “San Domenico Golf”, runs close to the Adriatic and is blessed with sweeping sea views from every tee, fairways ad green.
To develop the awareness of the beauty and importance of the historical past the hotel is part of, Masseria San Domenico has undertaken a project: the rediscovery of the antique Rupestrian settlements in the Fasano and Monopoli region, dedicating 2% of its proceeds to the ” Fondazione San Domenico”. This foundation is committed to the promotion of the study and research of the retrieval and the safeguarding of the heritage of the Rupestrian civilization in these districts.
