Riva was established after a storm struck the banks of Lake d’Iseo in 1842, damaging some of the boats moored there almost irreparably. Pietro Riva, born in Laglio on Lake Como, was a exceptional carpenter and made miracles happen when he arrived in Sarnico to repair the damaged vessels.
From repair work he quickly moved on to building boats, perfect boats, boats nobody had ever seen before.
The shipyard prospered and Pietro’s son Ernesto took over management of the shipyard, flanking innovation with quality and craftsmanship. Ernesto was the first Riva to assemble the internal combustion engine on the boats, building large vessels able to carry goods and passengers across the lake. When Serafino Riva took the shipyard in hand next, the tiller was pulled hard and resolutely over towards a new approach: from transportation, production moved towards motorboating, in its early stages at the time. This was another of those intuitions which make history. During the twenties and thirties, the Riva family made its mark with a series of records and victories in national and international competitions with their speedboats. It was a short step from there to pleasure boating. In the fifties, with Carlo Riva in charge, the brand became a synonym for elegance, status, perfection. Materials chosen only from the very best available, painstaking care taken over detail, almost ten years’ experience and artisan skill, enabled the shipyard to build yachts fit for and chosen by kings and queens from all countries, actors and actresses, sports champions, businessmen and women and all kinds of celebrities. Still today, these jewels retain the glamour of that period: the paparazzi and sunglasses, romantic escapes on the water, front page love stories, timeless luxury and elegance.
In an instant the new millennium was upon the company. In the year 2000, Riva became part of Ferrettigroup, one of the leading companies in luxury boating, and began a new season of development.
The new Riva style took form from the fusion between nautical technology and design. The same identical, unmistakeable style for the 33 feet of Aquariva Super or 115’ of Athena.
Today, as indeed in the past, the values which come to mind when one talks about Riva are artisan skill and innovative design. A design which makes each and every Riva a refined beauty, smart and timeless, a synthesis of clean, original and essential lines, and a top performance. A design which comes from the close working relationship between those who design, working in the wake of tradition, and those who skilfully produce the craft, with unique experience and skills handed down from generation to generation.
Maniacal care taken over detail. This, in short, is what Italian craftsmanship represents. For Riva, which has always counted among the best artisans of each period amongst its employees, a maniacal approach to its work is a source of pride. Clients find pleasure on board even in the tiniest detail, from the seating to the choice of materials, from the instrumentation to the shine of the woods, from the waterlines to the engines. Only through the love its artisans have for their work has Riva been able to create and develop a brand which evokes complete perfection.
Anyone choosing Riva does not simply choose a boat, but a whole world, a lifestyle, in which the values of the brand coincide with its history, with the family this brand has created and strengthened generation after generation. Epitome of Italian character, taste and elegance.
